The Connie Contest Award
What: A three-minute, time-limit speech/presentation held yearly in contest format open to members of NSA/GLAC who are in good standing and who have achieved at least a Bronze Microphone Pin Award from the Chapter. Each year’s contest winner receives a glass trophy [see accompanying photo] with an engraved picture of Connie Yambert and becomes a part of the Chapter's Hall of Fame.
Contestants are judged in the following catagories:
- Speech Development - Structure, Organization and Support Materials
- Effectiveness - Purpose, Interest, Reception
- Speech Value - Ideas, Logic, Original Thought
- Physical - Appearance, Body Language
- Voice - Flexibility, Body Language
- Manner - Directness, Assurance, Enthusiasm
- Appropriateness - To Speech Purpose, and to Audience
- Correctness - Grammar, Punctuation, Word Selection
Why: To recognize the importance of the need for professional speakers to make immediate contact and connection with their audiences; to honor the skill of our local chapter members who excel in communicating their message in three minutes or less; and to honor the professional accomplishments of Constance ("Connie" ) Dean Yambert
Who: Constance ("Connie") Dean Yambert, considered to be the Dean of American Public Speaking Coaches. With more than 35 years’ experience in training platform presentation skills. She is also a founder of NSA/GLAC and was Chapter president twice.
When: The 2008 Connie Contest usually held during the April regular Chapter meeting.
Contact: Those NSA/GLAC members in good standing and who have been awarded at least a Bronze Microphone Pin for Chapter excellence, and want to be a contestant in the Connie Contest should contact Jesus Nebot 323-295-0000 or jesus@jesusnebot.com as soon as possible.

A Brief History of the Connie Contest Award
The first Connie Contest was held in 1994 at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles with ten speakers competing. It was black-tie affair. The judges included Art Linkletter, CPAE; Cavett Robert, CSP, CPAE, and founder of NSA; Bill Gove, CSP, CPAE, and the first president of NSA; Roger Dawson, CSP, CPAE; and Connie Yambert. Lola Gillebaard was the first award winner of the Connie Contest.
