Where would a chapter be without its members? The answer is simple. There would be no chapter. GLAC is strong because of the contribution and dedication of its members. When Kelly asked me to participate in the December meeting around the theme of member appreciation, I couldn't have been more pleased. Having been a member of GLAC since 1995, I have many reasons to appreciate GLAC. I have had the opportunity to reap many rewards in terms of education and life-long friendships. I can still recall my first meeting, who was speaking and how I felt. The first two years I never missed a single meeting. Some of the people I met at that very first meeting are still my good friends today.

In addition I have had the opportunity to serve. Having had roles in the chapter as the Vice President, Meetings Industry Council Chair, Program Chair, CSP Liaison and on the board I have a great appreciation for the work it takes to keep a chapter moving in the right direction. I also know that it is difficult to be available all the time and the opportunity to serve can be any way big or small that you can contribute. The challenge can be difficult while you are focusing on your speaking career and trying to maintain your work/life balance. I know for me personally, as my daughter got into school and more involved in her activities, it placed new constraints on my time.

However, I think what I have learned is that the important thing is to do what you can, when you can for the chapter no matter how small or insignificant you may feel the job may be. A lot of people contributing something is better than a few people contributing everything.

As we wrap up 2008 it is a time to acknowledge all our members and to be grateful for GLAC. I encourage you to attend the December meeting to celebrate old friends and meet new ones. I'm grateful for you! This is one meeting you won't want to miss -see you there.
